Porsche Boxster 986: the most accessible sports youngtimer?

For under €15,000, enjoying the pleasure of driving a Porsche in the open air with a mid-rear engine is entirely possible. The Boxster 986 has been the most genuine entry point into the brand for years.

Why the 986 now?

Its value bottomed out a few years ago and is slowly climbing back up. The best-maintained examples are increasingly rare and sought after. Now is the right time to enter this market.

Points to watch out for

  • Intermediate shafts (IMS) — The Achilles heel of the M96 engine. A failing IMS bearing can destroy the entire engine. Check the service history and prioritise vehicles where the bearing has already been replaced.
  • Soft top — A new roof costs €1,500 to €2,500. Negotiate accordingly if it is worn.
  • Air conditioning — Crucial on a convertible. Make sure it works properly.

Budget

Expect to pay €8,000 to €18,000 for a good 986. Add €1,500 to €3,000 per year for maintenance if you use an independent Porsche specialist.
